Poundland is set to close yet another one of its UK stores. While it shut more than 100 stores across the country as part of a massive shakeup, this closure is happening for a separate reason. The chain closed nearly 150 stores throughout 2025 and the start of 2026 as it aimed to improve its financial standing. It comes after the chain was bought by investment firm Gordon Brothers last summer for just £1.

The discount store chain recently confirmed that its nationwide closures had wrapped up and that its store count had fallen from 800 to 651 as a result. However, the chain confirmed another store is set to close, this time due to the failure to secure an ongoing lease. The Poundland store at Two Saints Retail Park in Ormskirk will close at the end of March, the chain has confirmed. A closing-down sale has since been launched, allowing locals to buy goods at reduced prices.

A spokesperson for the company told the Daily Express: “We recently announced that the Ormskirk store was to close after we were unable to agree terms with the landlord, who, we assume, has other plans for the unit.”

Customers can get up to 40% off some items in the local Poundland store before its closure, Lancashire Post reports.

Poundland was one of many high street names to shut a slew of stores in 2025 and 2026. Most notably, River Island and Claire’s also shut a raft of stores around the country, blaming various factors such as changing customer habits.

The company announced in January that closures resulting from its restructuring will end, and any closures thereafter are “a consequence of standard business-as-usual lease events expected at a retailer with a large store network”.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “While there’s been significant progress as we refocus and re-energise the business with lower prices and a sharper offer, we know we still have much to do.

He added that the chain’s focus on their costs has, “without doubt, given us a platform for future growth, but no sustainable turnaround can be based on cost management alone.

“That’s why our focus in 2026 will be on delivering the kind of ranges and price simplicity our customers want right across the store – in clothing, homewares, as well as our core grocery aisles.”

Poundland issues shop closure update after shutting 150 UK stores

Poundland has announced that its restructuring programme which saw almost 150 stores close and helped it avoid plunging into administration is complete, but it says there’s still “much to do”. The major shake up was set in motion in June after the struggling high street band was bought by American investment firm Gordon Brothers from previous owners Pepco following a slump in sales.

In a bid to revive the chain’s fortunes, Poundland secured High Court approval last August for the plan which involved cutting its estate down from 800 to 651 stores, and reducing its work force from 14,200 to around 12,000 at the end of 2025, representing approximately 2,200 job losses. In a statement, Poundland has now said the wave of closures has come to an end. The company said: “Any future closures will be a consequence of standard business-as-usual lease events expected at a retailer with a large store network.”

However, Poundland emphasised that the work to turnaround their finances isn’t over. Christmas trading figures showed like-for-like underlying sales dropping 2.9% in the quarter to December 28 after the chain dropped prices.

However, comparable store sales by volume saw a 2% increase. Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “While there’s been significant progress as we refocus and re-energise the business with lower prices and a sharper offer, we know we still have much to do.

He added that the chain’s focus on their costs has, “without doubt, given us a platform for future growth, but no sustainable turnaround can be based on cost management alone”.

“That’s why our focus in 2026 will be on delivering the kind of ranges and price simplicity our customers want right across the store – in clothing, homewares as well as our core grocery aisles,” he added.

Mr Williams said their customers had told them “loud and clear they want a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value”.

“We have clear indications from the work we’ve already done that we’re on the right track.”

In a statement last year prior to the formal approval of the closures, Mr Williams said: “It’s sincerely regrettable that this plan includes the closure of stores and distribution centres, but it’s necessary if we’re to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.

“It goes without saying that if our plans are approved, we will do all we can to support colleagues who will be directly affected by the changes.”

Poundland closing 5 more stores in February after 8 January closures – full list

Discount retail giant Poundland is closing another five stores in February after shutting 8 in the second half of January alone.

The struggling bargain brand has already shut more than 100 shops since the middle of 2025 after quite aptly being sold for £1 to an investment firm.

A total of 13 shops will shut between January 18 and February 16, though there could be sales of up to 40% off at the affected locations before they shut up shop for good.

Poundland is among the chains to have suffered over the year from pressure on shoppers despite its value proposition.

The group was sold for £1 as a result and launched a major restructuring plan.

This involved the initial closure of 57 stores in a move which put more than 1,000 jobs at risk.

The company, which was bought by investment firm Gordon Brothers, has since announced further tranches of closures and is set to have shut more than 100 sites by the start of 2026, as part of efforts to trim its estate from around 800 sites to between 650 and 700 shops.

One key pressure point on retail is business rates. In the autumn budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced lower multipliers for retail, hospitality and leisure properties. However, the budget also confirmed the end of a Covid-era business rates discount, which had been scheduled to end but the government did not choose to extend again.

It’s expected to be another tough year for the UK high street, with a number of big-name brands set to close shops. It comes as a result of increasing business costs and a shift in shopping habits.

According to the Centre for Retail Research, 54 retailers collapsed in 2025, resulting in the loss of 3,080 stores and 30,153 employees. Meanwhile, over 500 bank branches closed for good due to an ongoing shift of customer behaviour, with an increasing number of people choosing to bank online or use mobile app services.

As reported by Time Out, a number of high street closures are already confirmed in 2026. These include retailers such as River Island and banks like Lloyds.

Here is the list of announced closures for 2026 so far.

The following Cancer Research UK stores will close this year. However, no specific closing dates have been provided yet.

Claire’s Accesories plunged into administration at the end of last year and stores remain under threat of closure in 2026.

Despite being acquired by investment firm Modella Capital, the chain could not make a successful comeback and is now on the look out for a buyer.

However, if a buyer isn’t found then all 150 stores across the UK could shut.

Like Claire’s, The Original Factory Shop fell into administration in 2025 and was acquired by Modella Capital.

However, it is yet to find a buyer with all 140 UK branches facing closure.

Poundland is set to shut down 12 of its stores in January 2026. After already slashing the size of the chain, the discount retailer hopes to achieve greater success from now on, securing its place on Britain’s future high streets.

The closing Poundland branches are holding clearance sales, with reductions of up to 40% and with items marked down in price until they are sold. The high street chain has confirmed it will have to shut a further two stores in February and more than 100 shops in the UK by early 2026.

The February stores closing include Winton, Dorset, on February 6, and Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on February 8.

Poundland has also pledged to price approximately 60% of grocery items at £1 throughout its network following the changes, which comes after a five-month trial at 17 stores in the West Midlands.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s UK country manager, said: “We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers. The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.

A new tranche of closures has been announced from high street bargain chain Poundland – with the first three shops closing today (Jan 5). The 12 shops will be closing in January and continue a stream of shutdowns which happened at the end of 2025.

The discount retailer has already slashed the size of its chain this year as it hopes to turn around its performance and secure its future on Britain’s high streets.

The Poundland shops that are due to close are holding clearance sales, with reductions of up to 40% and with items marked down in price until they are sold.

The budget retailer has pledged to price roughly 60% of grocery items at £1 throughout its network following the changes, which come after a five-month trial at 17 stores in the West Midlands.

The firm said the move will see it return “back to its roots” and mark “the end of additional price complexity”, with straightforward pricing set to roll out across general merchandise and clothing ranges in the coming months.

The number of Poundland stores is expected to drop to around 650 or 700 from 800 last year as leases expire or landlords exercise any option to serve notice, reports the Mirror.

Major retailer Poundland has confirmed the closure of additional UK stores following the sale of the budget brand earlier this year. In June, owners Pepco sold the brand to a US investment company, Gordon Brothers, for £1, and as part of the deal, a huge restructuring plan was announced and approved, leading to a significant number of stores being removed from the high streets.

This summer saw a huge number of Poundland stores launch sales ahead of the shops’ closing down for good. The chain has now confirmed that these closures will continue into 2026, with stores scheduled to close throughout December and into February.

The new plan will see the chain’s network of around 800 UK stores slashed to 650 to 700 stores. By the end of December, 18 more Poundland stores would have closed, with two scheduled to cease operation from tomorrow.

Items in the stores that are closing have been reduced, with some offers up to 40% off, while stock lasts.

Full list of UK shops and supermarkets shut on Boxing Day 2025

Shoppers are urged to plan ahead as a wave of major shops and supermarkets have announced they will be closed on Boxing Day.

Anyone planning a post-Christmas shopping spree will need to check opening/closing times, as more stores have announced their festive hours. From Aldi and Poundland to Marks and Spencer, here’s a round-up of UK shops that are closed on December 26.

Aldi has confirmed that all UK stores will shut on Boxing Day, following the same pattern as in past years. The doors shut at 6pm on Christmas Eve, and branches won’t reopen until December 27.

Home Bargains will also shut shops, allowing its staff members to get a Christmas break.

Marks and Spencer will close most of its stores on Boxing Day again. Only a handful of service stations will remain open, operating differently, however.

Poundland and The Works will be closed for the day.

Several other major high street names have also confirmed they will not open on Boxing Day, including Dunelm, Pets at Home, Wickes, and B&Q.

Tesco is closing its superstores on Boxing Day, although many Express shops will reopen with reduced hours.

Waitrose has only a very small number of its stores operating for the delivery platform; however, it will keep almost all of its branches shut.

Not every retail store will close on December 26. Lidl will be open across the UK on Boxing Day, with reduced hours.

Asda will reopen from mid-morning on Boxing Day, and Morrisons will remain open with limited hours.

Sainsbury’s will also be open to the public on Boxing Day; however, superstores will have reduced hours.

Boots, Superdrug and H&M will be open on Boxing Day, ready for their end-of-year sales.

Next has not confirmed its Boxing Day sales just yet, but historically, it has closed early. And Primark will likely be trading on December 26, in line with previous years.

Despite national policies, there will likely be some varying opening times depending on staffing, store size and location throughout the Christmas period.

The new year is just two months away and with brands restructuring across the country, shops are not only closing but opening too, with several expected to hit Britain’s high streets over the coming weeks.

A variety of supermarket giants, clothing retailers and even gyms are set to launch new stores in the next two months. JD Gym is among those expanding with the launch of its 100th branch penned in for November.

Lidl has made headlines for its dramatic restructuring plan including the opening of new locations. Lidl’s expansion will include “approximately 100 additional stores” across Britain, making that 159 grocceries alone. However, retailers are not to be left behind in the nation’s sprint ahead of the economy, with Drapers Online sharing the good news of fashion brands expanding amid the “doom and gloom”.

Poundland closed 52 stores as part of a 68 store closure plan unveiled by the recent acquisition by Pepco Group investment firm Gordon Brothers, in June. However, bargain hunters should not despair as the high street favourite is opening 37 new stores across the nation, with its infamous £1 deals set to return. Britbrief writes that several of these will appear in London’s “high-footfall areas”, as well as Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Cardiff.

Similarly, Asda has confirmed its expansion, with 22 stores to open before December 31. Restarting its Express store programme, the UK giant opened the first of its stores in Castleford this October, with a plan of 21 further openings to be carried out by the chain. The site states US brand Anthropologie to open three new UK stores this November, with another three openings for AllSaints to join them on the high street. Women’s Quiz Clothing has revealed plans to open between five and 10 new UK stores, however there is no hint as of yet to whether this will begin before January. Additionally, sought-after athleisure brand Alo is to expand its portfolio between late 2025 and 2026, with its first new location set to be outside of London.

According to The Independent, JD Gym, a subsect of the global chain JD Sports Fashion, has confirmed it is opening a new gym in Enfield, North London. The November launch will celebrate the firm’s 167th branch.

The struggling retailer has confirmed it will revert to straightforward £1, £2 and £3 grocery pricing throughout all its UK branches as the chain attempts to revive its fortunes after narrowly escaping administration.

The discount retailer pledged to price approximately 60% of grocery products at £1 throughout its network following the alterations, which follows a five-month trial at 17 outlets in the West Midlands.

The company stated the decision will see it return “back to its roots” and signal “the end of additional price complexity”, with straightforward pricing scheduled to be implemented across general merchandise and clothing ranges in forthcoming months.

The total of Poundland outlets is anticipated to fall to roughly 650 or 700 from 800 earlier this year as rental agreements expire or property owners exercise any option to serve notice.

The chain has confirmed that massive clearance sales are occurring in branches which are shutting down to clear the merchandise.

All these Poundland closures are due to leases expiring.

The group also noted that these changes have helped reduce shoplifting by over a quarter in trial stores, by discontinuing the sale of higher-priced items that were attractive to thieves, such as £5 dishwasher tablets.

As part of its recovery plans, Poundland has managed to avoid collapse following High Court approval for a major restructuring plan earlier this week. The retailer was on the brink of running out of money just days before the approval.

The scheme will inject up to £60 million of new funding to keep the retailer afloat and allows it to proceed with a store closure programme. This will result in 68 shops closing, affecting around 1,000 workers.

Barry Williams, Poundland’s managing director, said: “Customers have told us loud and clear during these pilots that they will back a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value.

“We’ve heard them, and the clear success of our pilot is why I’m confident that a Poundland that’s focused on the simple value our customers expect, has a bright future.”

In addition to the pricing overhaul, Poundland will also roll out a re-focused grocery range. It has already been extended to five stores outside of the West Midlands, in Manchester, Liverpool, Hanley, Brixton and Wandsworth.

Poundland stated that when complete, around 60% of grocery items will be priced at £1, 20% will be at £2, and 20% at £3. The firm, which was founded in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, in 1990, was sold by Pepco Group to Peach Bidco, a subsidiary of private equity firm Gordon Brothers, for £1 in June.
