Marks and Spencer is set to open a new store in the south west of England six months earlier than it originally planned. Shoppers will soon be welcomed to a new superstore at Weymouth Gateway Retail Park in Dorset on July 15.

M&S is known for its quality food, homeware and clothing, with more than 1,000 stores across the UK. The new shop will be home to a food hall and cafe as well as housing clothing, home and beauty items.

It will also feature the chain’s in-store bakery which sells a range of pastries, cakes, cookies, breads and doughnuts.

Charles Pinner, the regional manager at M&S, said: “We are excited to reveal that our brand-new Weymouth Gateway full-line store will open this summer.

“We expect the opening to create 50 new local jobs and are looking for colleagues who are passionate about serving customers and raising the bar in retail to join the team.”

Around 60 staff members who already work for a nearby M&S will be offered a role at the shop.

In 2024, the planning application was approved by Dorset Council, reports The Sun.

M&S are running a multi-million pound relocation project with investments into its supermarket stores. The new store will replace the St Mary Street branch.

M&S first started in 1884, when Michael Marks came to the north of England and managed to secure a stall at Kirkgate Market in Leeds.

He built his success using the slogan “Don’t ask the price, it’s a Penny”. The stall, which sold simple homewares, was soon thriving.

To support his growing business, Michael joined forces with Tom Spencer, a cashier from wholesalers Dewhirst.

From this partnership, the business began to take shape and eventually turned into the M&S we know today.

M&S to close huge stores in 2 major UK cities – first to go on Saturday

Marks & Spencer will close two huge high street stores in two major UK cities, with one set to shut later this week. The retail brand, founded in 1884, will look to reduce its high street storefronts on Saturday as it confirmed the closure of two stores.

The closures align with M&S‘s long-term plan to reduce the number of full-line stores to 180 while increasing the number of food stores to 420. There are currently 227 full-line stores and 335 food stores across the UK. M&S will look to shutter one of its biggest stores this Saturday. Confirmation of the closure came from an M&S spokesperson who said the store would serve customers for a final time on May 30.

Swansea’s city centre will lose its M&S on Saturday, with 92 jobs put at risk as a result of the closure. An M&S spokesperson said: “Our M&S Swansea city centre store will close on Saturday, 30 May.

“As previously announced, this decision forms part of our plans to reshape our store estate so we can invest in stores that better meet the needs of our customers.

“We remain committed to serving customers in Swansea through our nearby stores and online, and are working closely with Swansea Council and other local partners to explore opportunities for a future M&S presence in the city.”

A further store closure in Newport is scheduled for June, with the retail chain citing changes in customer shopping habits as the reason for the shutdown.

M&S regional manager, Richard Owen, said: “Customer shopping habits are changing, and as part of our UK‑wide store rotation programme, we are continually reviewing our store estate to ensure we have the right stores in the right places, with the right space to deliver an excellent shopping experience.

“Following the recent expiry of our lease, we have decided to close the M&S store in Newport Gwent at Friars Walk towards the end of June 2026. We understand this will be disappointing for some customers and colleagues.

“Our priority is to support our colleagues through this change, including exploring alternative roles at nearby M&S stores wherever possible. We will continue serving Newport customers through those nearby stores and online.”

Marks & Spencer has started building a major new £340million warehouse in Northamptonshire as part of plans to modernise its food supply chain. The retailer confirmed construction is now under way on its new automated National Distribution Centre (NDC), which is set to open in 2029. The 1.3 million-square-foot site is the largest-ever investment in M&S’s supply chain and will support more than 1,000 permanent jobs once complete.

The milestone was marked with a steel-signing ceremony at the site, led by Michelle Elliman from the M&S Rugby store. She was joined by Kevin Bennett, CEO of Gist, M&S Food’s logistics arm, Stuart Andrew, MP for Daventry and Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and representatives from Prologis (the logistics property developer behind the site).

More than 200 M&S Food stores will be serviced by the new distribution centre. The company said the site will increase capacity, reduce long-term costs and improve product availability for customers.

Mr Bennett said: “Starting the build on this site marks a major step in transforming M&S into a true destination for the weekly shop, with a modernised supply chain at the heart of that ambition. This investment will boost capacity for future growth, lower our long-term cost to serve, and improve product availability so customers get the right products in the right place at the right time.

“With construction under way, this new site strengthens our network and puts us ahead of the volume curve as we build a bigger, better Food business. By deploying the latest proven automation, we’re future-proofing our operations and UK retail logistics, while creating 1,000 permanent jobs on site.”

The project was first announced in August 2025. At the time, Alex Freudmann, managing director at M&S Food, said: “We’re transforming M&S into a destination for the weekly shop and modernising our supply chain is central to that ambition.

“This investment will boost capacity for future growth, lower our cost to serve over the long-term, and improve product availability – ensuring customers find the right products in the right place at the right time.

By using the latest, proven automation, we are future-proofing both our business and UK retail logistics, as well as creating 1,000 jobs permanently on site and 2,000 during the construction phase.”

The new depot will use advanced automation, including an automated pallet crane for long-life ambient products, a high-speed shuttle system for sorting and storing stock, and a hands-free picking solution that loads items directly onto store-ready delivery cages.

M&S said these systems will improve efficiency and accuracy, while making restocking faster and easier for colleagues in stores.

The building is designed to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating, placing it among the most sustainable buildings globally and making it M&S’s flagship Plan A warehouse.

Sustainability features will include responsibly sourced and recycled building materials, an EPC A+ rating with a large-scale rooftop solar array, rainwater harvesting, EV charging points, energy-saving technologies and a dedicated vehicle maintenance unit.

Mr Andrew said: “I welcome the investment by Marks & Spencer into the new distribution centre in Daventry. It was great to visit the impressive site and meet the people involved, and learn about the future plans for the centre. This area has for a long time been at the heart of the UK’s logistics network, and this investment shows confidence in the local people and businesses.”

Lidl announces locations of 2 new UK stores opening in January 2026

Lidl has confirmed where two new UK stores will open this month. The discount supermarket’s staff will welcome customers through the doors of branches in Brough, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Burntwood in Staffordshire.

Shoppers in Brough can expect their new Lidl to open on Thursday (January 15) while those in Burntwood won’t have long to wait as their branch opens a week later on January 22. The new branches are among 19 Lidl plans to open over the next eight weeks as part of a nationwide expansion.

Lidl announced on Tuesday that it was also renovating over 70 of its existing outlets to the tune of £43million. Changes as part of the store overhaul include new tills and bigger freezers to offer a wider range of products.

The chain is also launching new energy-saving features, such as chillers which use natural refrigerants and smart lighting systems that reduce electricity use.

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, hailed the company’s commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for communities.

He added: “With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”

Market share figures from Worldpanel show Lidl made the greatest gain among the supermarkets over the 12 weeks to December 28. It added 0.5 percentage points to claim 7.8% of the market and saw sales growth of 10%.

In comparison, grocery sales at M&S were 7.2% higher over the 12 weeks compared with the same period a year earlier.

M&S sought to position itself as a challenger to the “big six” supermarkets on Wednesday when it announced an expansion of its value food item range.

It has launched more than 30 new value products this month, including core family items such as 500g and 750g packs of 5% fat beef mince and 1kg bags of frozen sweetcorn.

The retailer said sales of M&S value lines, including “remarksable value”, “dropped & locked” and “bigger pack, better value” items were up 20% in the third quarter of last year while the “remarksable value” range alone had doubled in size since 2023.

M&S, which is known for its high-end own-brand food products, claimed to be the fastest-growing grocer with families, based on till receipts data from analysts Worldpanel.

YouGov figures also suggest a three percentage point uptick over the last two years in families now likely to consider shopping at M&S Food while perceptions of value at M&S among families has improved by 10 percentage points over the same period.

The move from M&S comes amid a flurry of price promises by the major supermarkets as they compete to attract households struggling with rising food inflation amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Food inflation increased to 3.3%, up from November’s 3% and far outstripping wider shop price inflation of 0.7%, according to latest British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NIQ data.

Marks and Spencer has confirmed that one of its long-running Yorkshire stores will close, dealing a fresh blow to a city centre already struggling with falling footfall. The retailer has announced that its Kirkgate branch in Wakefield will shut after decades of trading, though a final closing date has not yet been given.

The company said the decision reflects how customers are choosing to shop, with more people buying online or travelling to larger retail parks instead of traditional high street locations. The news has triggered disappointment locally as Wakefield continues to face pressure from declining visitor numbers and rising operating costs.

Following the announcement, a message was shared on a Facebook group that read: “We’re sorry to hear that M&S has announced it will be closing its Kirkgate store, after many years in Wakefield city centre.”

Many locals expressed their frustration in the comments section, with one customer saying: “It was my family’s favourite shop.” Another asked: “Why are all the shops closing nowadays?”

Responding to the news Wakefield BID added: “While this represents a change within Wakefield city centre, it reflects a wider shift in strategy taking place across the UK rather than a decision linked to local city-centre performance.

“Across the country, M&S has been moving away from traditional city-centre department stores for a number of years, responding to changing shopping habits and focusing investment on different store formats.

“Similar closures and relocations have taken place in towns and cities nationwide as high streets continue to evolve.

“No single retailer defines the future of Wakefield city centre. Its strength lies in its mix of businesses, activity and experiences, and in its ability to adapt as patterns continue to change.

“Wakefield BID will continue to champion the city centre, support its businesses and focus on keeping Wakefield a place people want to visit, spend time and do business.”

Retail analysts say Wakefield is not alone. Town and city centres across Britain are seeing long-established stores review whether older units remain viable.

Many major chains are shifting investment towards fewer, larger sites as they reshape their estates.

The Centre for Retail Research has warned that thousands more closures are likely in the year ahead.

Its latest forecast suggests around 17,350 retail premises could close in 2025, following a difficult 2024 in which roughly 13,000 shops shut permanently, a 28% rise compared with the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre, said that the trend remains worrying.

He added: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come.”

Retailers are facing a combination of rising costs and weaker consumer spending.

According to the British Retail Consortium, upcoming changes to employer National Insurance contributions will add £2.3billion in costs for the sector from April.

At the same time, the national minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour, with workers aged 18 to 20 seeing their pay increase to £10 an hour, up by £1.40.

Industry groups say these pressures come on top of high energy costs and the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis, which has led many households to cut back on non-essential purchases.

Professor Bamfield warned that the combination of falling demand and rising bills could push job losses to levels not seen since the pandemic.

He said: “By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

Shoppers are urged to plan ahead as a wave of major shops and supermarkets have announced they will be closed on Boxing Day.

Anyone planning a post-Christmas shopping spree will need to check opening/closing times, as more stores have announced their festive hours. From Aldi and Poundland to Marks and Spencer, here’s a round-up of UK shops that are closed on December 26.

Aldi has confirmed that all UK stores will shut on Boxing Day, following the same pattern as in past years. The doors shut at 6pm on Christmas Eve, and branches won’t reopen until December 27.

Home Bargains will also shut shops, allowing its staff members to get a Christmas break.

Marks and Spencer will close most of its stores on Boxing Day again. Only a handful of service stations will remain open, operating differently, however.

Poundland and The Works will be closed for the day.

Several other major high street names have also confirmed they will not open on Boxing Day, including Dunelm, Pets at Home, Wickes, and B&Q.

Tesco is closing its superstores on Boxing Day, although many Express shops will reopen with reduced hours.

Waitrose has only a very small number of its stores operating for the delivery platform; however, it will keep almost all of its branches shut.

Not every retail store will close on December 26. Lidl will be open across the UK on Boxing Day, with reduced hours.

Asda will reopen from mid-morning on Boxing Day, and Morrisons will remain open with limited hours.

Sainsbury’s will also be open to the public on Boxing Day; however, superstores will have reduced hours.

Boots, Superdrug and H&M will be open on Boxing Day, ready for their end-of-year sales.

Next has not confirmed its Boxing Day sales just yet, but historically, it has closed early. And Primark will likely be trading on December 26, in line with previous years.

Despite national policies, there will likely be some varying opening times depending on staffing, store size and location throughout the Christmas period.

M&S announces 500 locations for new food stores across UK – full list

Marks and Spencer has unveiled a list of 500 potential locations for new and revamped Food stores, as part of its ambitious plan to double the size of its food business. The retail giant is set to open or renew 20 stores by the end of the financial year, creating 800 new jobs, signalling an acceleration in its store estate renewal.

As it gears up for growth, M&S is strategically opening stores with optimal space in prime locations, aiming to modernise its store estate while doubling its food business. To achieve this, the retailer plans to expand its Food stores to offer a wider range of products and attract more customers for their weekly shop.

The company reported that new M&S Food stores opened in the past three years have been successful, prompting it to broaden its search for suitable sites. This includes areas currently without an M&S store, such as Hove, Marlborough and Wallingford.

These proposed stores will feature the new renewal format, boasting an extended range of MandS Food, wider aisles for larger shopping trolleys, and spacious car parks to accommodate more family shoppers. The Food store in Selby, which opened on Three Lakes retail park last year, has exceeded expectations, delivering above-average food market share growth in the region, according to the chain.

M&S is currently scouting 500 potential sites to expand its modernised store format across existing markets and introduce Food shops to fresh locations. The retailer expects over half its estate, including convenience outlets, to feature the renewal format by April 2028.

This expansion follows a challenging period in which profits dropped by more than half after a significant cyber attack earlier this year caused online home and fashion sales to crash by over 40% when website orders were suspended.

The high street chain saw underlying pre-tax profits slump 55.4% to £184.1 million during the six months ending September 27.

On a reported basis, profits were virtually eliminated, collapsing to £3.4 million from £391.9 million the previous year. MandS has revealed that a cyber attack cost the company £324 million in lost sales, slightly more than its initial estimate of £300 million.

However, it managed to recoup £100 million in the first half of the year through an insurance payout.

The attack is expected to impact profits by around £136 million, including an additional £34 million in the last six months of its financial year, according to M&S .

Sales in the fashion division fell by 16.4% as the cyber attack caused chaos, with online sales down 42.9% and in-store sales 3.4% lower.

The high street giant had to halt all online sales for approximately six weeks and faced empty shelves due to disruption to its logistics systems after hackers targeted the business around Easter weekend.

Hackers also stole customer personal data, which could have included names, email addresses, postal addresses and dates of birth.
