The tsunami warning for the entire state of Hawaii has been downgraded to a tsunami advisory while parts of Japan has had its warning also downgraded to an advisory, with a warning still in place farther north.
The downgrade in Hawaii by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center means that there remains a potential for strong currents or dangerous waves, along with flooding along the beach or in harbor areas, authorities said at a press conference.
Japan’s tsunami warning level remains in effect for parts of Hokkaido and Tohoku. It was downgraded to an advisory in the Pacific coast south of Fukushima.

While initial waves remained relatively calm in Kauai, officials urged continued caution as \"significant\" waves were still anticipated.
At a press conference, NOAA’s Dr. Chip McCreery said instructions on when it would be safe to return to the coast will come from state and county emergency management agencies.
\"We’ve got a ways to go,\" he told reporters. \"It’s probably going to be several hours before we may even be able to lower the warning here in Hawaii to advisory level.\"
He added the state was highly unlikely to lift all warnings and advisories before Wednesday.
\"We are waiting to see just how big it is going to get across the state,\" he said.

In a press conference, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Hawaii has yet to see major tsunami waves, but the danger has not yet passed.
\"We have not seen a wave of consequence which is a great relief,\" he said.
However, Green said officials would not give an all-clear for at least another two to three hours.
\"But so far, so good,\" he added.
Green said they were paying special attention to indicators that water levels had receded, which could point to bigger waves on the way.

Hotels in Hawaii, including Disney’s Aulani Resort in Ko Olina, are evacuating their guests to higher floors in anticipation of a tsunami hitting the state shortly after 7pm local time.
Aulani guests received alerts urging them to go to floors 3 and above on Tuesday evening, CNN reports.
“A lot of the hotels are on the beach and across from the beach,” Jerry Gibson, president of the Hawai‘i Hotel Alliance told The Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “They are moving everyone to higher floors and checking provisions. They are also looking at moving everything that is in a low-lying area, including cars and machinery.”

Hawaii Governor Josh Green urged residents to evacuate coastal areas and to avoid beaches at all costs as the state braces for tsunami landfall around 7:10pm local time.
“Everyone has to be away from the shoreline,” he emphasized in a briefing on Tuesday. “It is not a regular wave, it will actually kill you.”
Hawaii is facing a Tsunami Warning following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off of Russia’s eastern coast, and authorities are calling on residents in affected areas to seek shelter inland or at higher ground as soon as they can.
“That is the most serious warning that you can have … which means we have to evacuate the coastal zones right away,” Green said.
He noted that residents should expect two more sirens, about one hour before the tsunami is projected to hit and about thirty minutes prior to that time.
Green said he believed people would have “adequate time” to reach safer locations in the interim and was optimistic that the state could avoid fatalities if residents followed authorities’ guidance.
For people unable to leave coastal areas, Green said that going up four stories in a building could serve as a vertical evacuation.
“You can expect a tsunami wave to hit the state and it will not just hit one beach, it will wrap around the islands very likely,” he said, adding that flooding would probably be imminent.
Green warned residents not to leave secure areas until they receive an all-clear from regional officials after the tsunami makes landfall.

The Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan was evacuated following tsunami alerts in the region, according to Agence France-Presse.
The area is among those that’s at risk after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off Russia’s eastern coast.
\"We have evacuated all workers and employees,” a spokeswoman for the plant told AFP.

President Donald Trump amplified a Tsunami Warning for Hawaii on Tuesday evening as state authorities encourage residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate.
Trump added that Alaska and states along the West Coast are also under a Tsunami Watch following a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia.
According to the National Weather Service, a Warning means that a tsunami is projected or already occurring, and it calls for evacuation to higher ground or inland. A Watch, meanwhile, means a tsunami is possible, and that people should stay prepared and monitor developments.
Trump directed people to consult tsunami.gov — which has maps of affected areas — for additional guidance.

\"Do NOT try to go to the coast to take photos,\" cautioned officials in Bay Area. \"You’re not just putting yourself at risk, you will also be putting rescue teams at risk.\"

Japan Lifts All Remaining Tsunami Warnings; Advisories Remain In Place
Japan has lifted all of its remaining tsunami warnings, according to its Meteorological Agency.
Advisories remain in place along Japan’s entire Pacific coast.
Tsunami Warning Downgraded To Advisory For All Of Hawaii, Parts Of Japan
Hawaii Waves Remain Relatively Calm, But Officials Urge People To Remain Evacuated
While initial waves remained relatively calm in Kauai, officials urged continued caution as “significant” waves were still anticipated.
At a press conference, NOAA’s Dr. Chip McCreery said instructions on when it would be safe to return to the coast will come from state and county emergency management agencies.
“We’ve got a ways to go,” he told reporters. “It’s probably going to be several hours before we may even be able to lower the warning here in Hawaii to advisory level.”
He added the state was highly unlikely to lift all warnings and advisories before Wednesday.
“We are waiting to see just how big it is going to get across the state,” he said.
Hawaii Gov. Says ‘So Far, So Good,’ But Threat Still Remains
In a press conference, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Hawaii has yet to see major tsunami waves, but the danger has not yet passed.
“We have not seen a wave of consequence which is a great relief,” he said.
However, Green said officials would not give an all-clear for at least another two to three hours.
“But so far, so good,” he added.
Green said they were paying special attention to indicators that water levels had receded, which could point to bigger waves on the way.
Monterey Issues Evacuation Warning For Harbors
The city of Monterey, California, is warning people who live on boats in the area to evacuate due to potential tsunami waves expected to hit in a couple hours.
“The City of Monterey Police Department is issuing an evacuation warning to all persons living aboard vessels in the Monterey Harbor slips and mooring areas, including Breakwater Cove, Coast Guard Pier, and adjacent areas,” city officials said in a statement.
Tsunami Waves Expected In Hawaii Soon
The first tsunami waves are expected to hit the Hawaiian islands within the next 15 minutes.
The waves will first reach Kauai’s North Shore, home to Hanalei Bay. Hanalei has frequently faced major floods, including after a devastating storm in 2018 left parts of the town under five to eight feet of water.
Hawaii Hotels Urge Guests To Move To Higher Floors
Maps Show Potential Flood Zones In Hawaii
Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency shared several maps showing where flooding can be expected should significant tsunami waves hit the islands.
Hawaii Governor Issues Stark Evacuation Warning Ahead of Expected Tsunami Landfall
Here’s When The Tsunami Is Expected To Hit Key Areas

Part Of Northern California Coast Now Under Tsunami Warning
The National Weather Service has upgraded a part of the California coastline to a tsunami warning.
The warning applies to the coast from Mendocino to the California/Oregon border. This includes Crescent City, Calif., which has a long history of seeing tsunami impacts.
Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Plant Has Been Evacuated Following Tsunami Alerts
The Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan was evacuated following tsunami alerts in the region, according to Agence France-Presse.
The area is among those that’s at risk after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off Russia’s eastern coast.
“We have evacuated all workers and employees,” a spokeswoman for the plant told AFP.
In 2011, reactors at the nuclear plant were flooded after a tsunami hit the region, leading to a meltdown and the release of dangerous radioactive material.
“No abnormality” has been observed thus far, the spokeswoman said.
