The disruptions began around 7 a.m. in London, the tech giant said. The cause of the outage was not immediately clear.
Google said on Tuesday that it was experiencing technical issues with several of its cloud computing services based around London, which caused disruptions and prompted engineers to investigate.
“Multiple Google Cloud services are experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in europe-west2 region,” the company said in an update on its website, referring to the area around London. “We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption,” it added.
The issue began shortly after 7 a.m. local time (2 a.m. Eastern), the company said. In an update at midday, it said the disruptions were continuing and advised affected customers to move their work to other locations.
It was not clear what caused the outage. In response to a request for comment, a spokeswoman for Google said the company was investigating the issue and referred to its online dashboard for further updates.
Many companies use Google’s cloud computing services to power their services and apps, relying on the technology giant to run their online applications out of its data centers.
According to Downdetector, which tracks internet disruptions, users reported issues with digital services at several British banks and other websites starting around 7 a.m., including Revolut, Lloyds and HSBC. It was not immediately clear whether the outages were connected to Google.
Revolut, a British online bank, said in a post on social media that it was experiencing a disruption affecting multiple services, though it did not provide details on a cause. According to its website, some users were struggling to make card payments or withdraw cash from A.T.M.s. A spokesman for the bank said customers’ accounts and data were safe.
Lloyds said customers could log into their accounts but some were experiencing issues with certain online services. “We are aware of similar issues affecting other organizations and are monitoring the situation closely,” it said in a statement.
HSBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
